The Symphony Orchestra (SO), conducted by Dr. Charles Baldwin, is the most advanced of CYS Orchestras.  The SO has existed for over 50 years with Dr. Robert Chesebro as Conductor and Musical Director for 25 years. Upon his retirement, Dr. Leslie Hicken took over as Conductor and Artistic Director and Dr. Chesebro was named Conductor Emeritus.  Dr. Leslie Hicken retired as the Symphony Orchestra Conductor and Artistic Director after 24 years.  Dr. Hicken was designated Conductor Emeritus by unanimous support of the CYS Board of Directors and Staff at the 2023 Fall Peace Center Concert.

The SO exists to provide experience and instruction to advanced young musicians who perform the standard orchestral repertory, always in original editions. Wind players are often required to transpose at sight, and additional clef reading is a requirement for most members.
